Panos Kirnidis, CEO of Palau International Shipping Registry, said the shipping industry needs to wake up and embrace the idea of smart shipping because smart shipping is here and the recession in the world economy will not last forever. While smart shipping is likely to remain in trouble until the world economy recovers, that won't stop people from continuing to develop the technology behind it.
The shipping industry needs to wake up to the idea of smart shipping Click and drag to move
Panos Kirnidis said, "The shipping industry recognizes that smart ships and smart technology are the way forward, but some ship owners seem reluctant to fully embrace the technology. When the world economy improves and the global shipping industry recovers, technological progress will be one of the real drivers. It's time to embrace this technology. Smart ships are here, and so will smart registrations.
Information is the key to the smooth operation of the ship and it will not be affected by the state of the world economy and the reaction of the shipping market. Now we in the shipping industry must invest in and develop smart technologies, not act in the future when the world shipping industry recovers. In this way, you will be at the forefront of the trend and catch up with other shipping registration peers. Shipowners, like registered companies, need to prepare for this recovery.
Smart technology will influence the approach we offer to shipowners and managers to enable them to navigate the seas. As a ship registration business, we need to be able to provide technology including operation, maintenance and data collection. Now it's about accountability and data management."
Palau International Ship Registry launched a new Defect Prevention System (DPS) at the end of 2016, with a dedicated department monitoring all Palau-registered vessels to reduce underruns and casualty rates, as part of the company's push to consolidate its status as a smart flag nation.
"Some registries seem unwilling to embrace the digital age. In addition to the above defect prevention system, we also have our own web-based solution (Smart electronic flagging) that provides shipowners with the information they need to retrieve the key performance indicators of their fleet. This is another step into the smart technology environment, which we believe is essential for any ship registration in the 21st century." We have transitioned from paper and waiting times to digital information on demand. Performance needs to move in the direction of high efficiency and cost effectiveness, and smart technology is needed to drive them."
Recent investments in the construction of smart and unmanned autonomous ships have awakened the shipping industry to a new way of working, which Mr Panos Kirnidis sees as another step in a period of transformation. "Shipowners need confidence, and confidence comes from registries that have the knowledge and vision to keep pace with The Times. It's a world that needs timely monitoring and data transmission, and you can't do that if you're still working on paper and systems that were designed and built in the last century."
